Adult Education/GED
LBW provides Adult Education services to help students become career-ready.
Classes provide a second opportunity for adult learners committed to improving their academic and life skills. Instruction is based on individual student need and may range from one-on-one tutoring to group instruction. Classes are available throughout Covington, Crenshaw, and Butler Counties. Services are available to all Alabama residents 18 years or older with proof of address and identification documents. Out of School Youth that are 16-17 years of age may participate in the program with special documentation.

More than 29,000 residents participated in Adult Education in Alabama’s community colleges last year.
More than 5,000 GED and high school equivalency certificates and diplomas were awarded. Be a part of that number.
The GED® exam is a nationally recognized high school equivalency test delivered exclusively on the computer which provides a consistent testing experience nationwide and improved passing rates. Same-day scoring on all four parts is available, as well as a score report for reporting and remediation. Tests can be administered individually or as a group as selected by the candidate. A GED® Passing Score of 145 is required in each of the four content areas:
- Math (115 minutes) – Quantitative & algebraic problem solving
- Science (90 minutes) – Life science, physical science, earth and space science
- Social Studies (70 minutes) – Civics and government, U.S. history, economics, geography, and the world
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (150 minutes) – Ability to read closely, write clearly, and edit and understand written text.
The cost of the GED® test is $144 ($36 per subject); however, students enrolled in the Adult Education Program can test for free when they qualify for testing vouchers!
Exam Registration Information
- To schedule an exam, please contact one of our Adult Education Instructors to help you with the process.
- Same day registrations are NOT accepted at this location.
- Accommodations are available for those with proven physical, emotional and learning disabilities and must be requested in advance with appropriate documentation.
- A valid Driver’s license, State Identification card, or any valid government issued photo identification is required for admittance to take the exam.
- LBW administers the GED test on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and some Saturdays, at the MacArthur Campus in Opp. GED testing is also offered one Friday per month at the LBW Campus in Greenville. More dates are added as able so please be sure to check GED.com for availability.
- The test center is located in Building F, Room F-4 at 1708 North Main Street, Opp, AL 36467.

An alternative to the GED high school equivalency
HSDO is designed for students 19 years or older who have completed all of the required credits for graduation but failed the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE), or students who have dropped out of the traditional high school setting after earning 10 credits but before earning all of the required credits. After receiving an official transcript from the last Alabama high school attended, students will work the HSDO coordinator to determine eligibility and the best option available to them. LBW AE works with your local high school for you to obtain the requirements that you need to earn your high school diploma. Students receive a traditional high school diploma from their last Alabama public school after completing the HSDO program.
IET Programs are available to provide contextual and concurrent literacy, employment preparation, and workplace skills training to our students to prepare them for employment in a high wage high demand job according to the ACCCP. Some of the IETs available include:
- Pharmacy Technician
- Welding
- CDL Prep
- LPN with co-enrollment
- Patient Care Technician
- CARES (Dementia) Certification
- Certified Medical Administrative Assistant
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
- Certified Billing and Coding Specialist
- Food and Beverage Specialist (ServSafe Certification)
Construction, IT, and Drone Operation will be added in the upcoming year.
Students learn English skills using real-life situations, like going to the doctor’s office or filling out a job application, group interaction, and listening and speaking activities.
ESL classes equip students with the confidence and skills needed to better succeed in the workplace, community, and other educational/training programs. Instruction is provided in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar.
Thank you so much for your interest in taking the ACT Work Keys test as part of your education or employment process. The National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is earned after successful completion of three ACT WorkKeys skills assessments: Applied Math, Workplace Documents, and Graphic Literacy. Participants have the opportunity to earn a bronze, silver, gold, or platinum certificate based on assessment scores. Participants receive access to assessments and targeted preparation for these assessments through WorkKeys Curriculum. For those registered in Adult Ed, these assessments are given free of charge.
This certificate is commonly referred to as the “BAT” test for those needing it for Police Academy admission. It is also taken by those seeking substitute teacher certification.
The ACT Work Keys is administered through our Adult Education Program. Workplace Documents, Graphic Literacy, and Applied Mathematics are offered at no cost to the applicant when taken together. Should an applicant need to retake any segment of the test, the applicant is allowed to re-take that segment for free with some work in the online curriculum.
To register for the exam, please register with Adult Education. You may test at one of the following locations:
- LRC Building on our Andalusia Campus
- Greenville at the Student Support Center
- Jeff Coates Building in Opp
Please allow up to three hours to complete the test in its entirety. After your registration is processed, you will be offered the opportunity to enroll in our online learning platform to assist achieving the best score. This $80 value is offered for free just for registering to take the exam. It can be accessed from any computer, tablet, or mobile device with a browser that supports HTML5 and is personalized to individual needs based on a short pre-test in each section.
As the minimum entry level score is based upon a specific job analysis profile and varies for each discipline, it is important when scheduling the ACT Work Keys Assessment that each applicant specify whether the test is for a Law Enforcement Officer, State Correctional Officer, or Substitute Teacher position. Those wanting to take the exam for a substitute or para professional position with a school district should contact LBW Work Force Department at (334) 881-2248 for registration. After successful exam completion, you will receive the Work National Career Readiness Certificate. The NCRC measures and certifies the essential work skills needed for success in jobs across industries and occupations.

Alabama Career Essentials (ACE) is a FREE training course designed by the Alabama Community College System to provide Alabamians with relevant, cutting-edge, and industry-driven employability skills training to better prepare individuals for the Alabama workforce.
Participants will learn the following:
- Computer Literacy
- Math for Work
- Financial Literacy
- Effective Communication
- Resolving Problems in the Workplace
- Workplace Etiquette
- Employment Preparation
- Healthy Workplace Environments
- Workplace Safety
Upon completion, Students will earn one free college class plus 3 articulated credits when enrolling at a community college as well as the Alabama Certified Employee credential.
MAPs are free, short-term, virtual training programs with concentrations available in Healthcare, Construction, Transportation, Information Technology, Hospitality and Tourism, and Manufacturing. Participants can gain industry-specific skillsets, gainful employment, opportunities for advancement in a current job, and a potential college credit for college-level courses in specific career and technical education. Prepare today for a better tomorrow!
This program targets youth in Butler, Crenshaw, and Pike Counties ages 16-24 that have dropped out of high school or are not successfully employed to help them complete their GED and acquire necessary employability skills. Career training, post-secondary education, and life skills are a few of the opportunities available. Incentives are offered for attaining goal specific achievements.
Incentives are awarded as follow for academic improvements and achievements:
HSO or GED Completion ($100)
Participants who earn their high school degree through the HSO Option or complete their GED may be authorized to receive an incentive award. The amount of the incentive is $50.00 after successfully completing two exams and $50.00 after completing the final two portions of the GED test.
Successful Completion of the ACE + MAPS ($50)
Participants may be authorized to receive an incentive award for the successful completion of the Alabama Certified Employee and Mobilizing Alabama Pathways Programs.

Using technology in daily life and the essential computer and software skills are covered.
